In order to build a new development platform that will overlap the interests of the City of Rijeka and the University of Rijeka in the context of Rijeka’s urban transition, in the summer of 2018 University of Rijeka has established the Center for Urban Transition, Architecture and Urbanism – DeltaLab. DeltaLab is a multidisciplinary research, education and production center. It is a completely different concept of an organization that brings together architects, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, sociologists, culturologists, philosophers, artists, activists and many others, focused on useful short- and medium-term projects in urban space, culture and art, new technologies and trends.

With the help of Idis Turato, an architect from Rijeka, DeltaLab, has gathered 17 architecture and design teams. A number of scientists, experts and artists from Rijeka, Croatia and abroad have collaborated with DeltaLab. All together they have contributed to the development of the Sweet & Salt program as part of the Rijeka 2020.

The Sweet & Salt flagship activates the city in the zone where the river (sweet) meets the sea (salty). The aim of this programme is the revival of urban areas, former industrial and port facilities and the initiation of changes. Rijeka is the only city on the Adriatic through which the river flows, but the river Rječina is today a hostage of industry. Along the five kilometers of space where the sea meets the Rječina canyon, there is a port with many abandoned buildings and several other active buildings, parking lots, warehouses, bus storage and a water treatment plant. At no point in the 20th century was this space used for rest, leisure or contact with nature. So, the Sweet & Salt flagship will simultaneously be a mirror of the present and a window into the future. It will awaken the “city that flows” and draw attention to the specific urban area.
