It started in 2000 as a project of a group of friends who worked for a civic association Cinefil. They screened movies in the city center of Košice for about 20,000 viewers a year and their dream was to start a center for audiovisual culture one day. This came true in 2015 when they settled down in an old cinema called Kino Úsmev, which has since become one of the most recognizable and popular spots in Košice.

Kino Úsmev has distinguished itself as a place for the more demanding moviegoers. They offer a rich selection of arthouse cinema and independent films that are very different from classic blockbusters. In addition to film screenings, they organize and host many cultural events. They also organize workshops and support the work of local screenwriters and thus create an environment for them to develop a film directly in Slovakia.

An obvious plus is a bar and the outside area with street food trucks in front of the cinema. Here, film-lovers can sit down and talk about their thoughts and opinions about the film they have just seen. This is the main difference between this type of cinema and multiplex cinemas in shopping centers, where you can only find shops or the car park. With regard to street food, food trucks offer anything from burgers, loaded fries, and hot dogs to vegetarian pho.

It’s a place where the old and the new meet which attracts people from various age groups. Kino Úsmev is simply the place to be and must-visit if you are in town.
