Estonian Open Air Museum

Discovery | Inspiration | People

With just a 15-minute drive from the centre of Tallinn, you will find a wonderful place - the Estonian Open Air Museum, showcasing Estonia's rural architecture and way of life, that will make you feel like time travelling.

The museum is open all year-round, offering entertainment, lovely workshops, different events, and something, regardless of your age, you might not have experienced before. It is located in the quiet seaside of Rocca al Mare area, an ideal place for picnics and escapes from the city life - although Tallinn’s city life as a tourist does not feel that overwhelming at all!

The entrance to Estonian Open Air Museum is Free with a Tallinn Card, otherwise it costs 8 € in winter and 10 € in summer time. In the surrounding area there are many fun, family-oriented theme fairs taking place, where traditions are passed on to the younger generation through games, songs and dances.

The flourishing forested park of the Museum comprises - as you might expect to find in any proper village - numerous thatched farm buildings as well as historic windmills, a wooden chapel, village school (Kuie school), an inn (Kolu inn), fire station, shop, and fishing sheds by the sea. Staff in period costume demonstrates how people lived and worked in the past times. There are 14 farms in the museum which provide an overview of how families from different strata of society lived in the 18–20th centuries.

At the museum it is also possible to try horse and cart rides (and in winter sleigh rides), traditional Estonian dishes at the Kolu inn, and eventually you can buy various wonderful handicraft products at the shop. Enjoy the expositions which encompass Western, Northern and Southern Estonia, the Islands, and also stand-alone objects - altogether about 80 exhibit buildings. No matter what time you visit Estonian Open Air Museum, there is always something to do and see. Also, you can check the event section in the Museum’s website to see if there are any additional events happening during the time of your visit: evm.ee/eng/events/events

This Museum experience will most probably transform the way you enjoy Museums for good, and maybe you will even start asking for living history whenever you enter a historical museum next time! And for those who might not enjoy historical museums that much… we are sure that the Estonian Open Air Museum will most probably change your view.
